Hydroponic gardening - Hydroponic light/nutrient timers
Hydroponic timers for your Hydroponic grow lights and for the Hydroponic nutrient pump make Hydroponic gardening so much easier. You can make almost everything within the Hydroponic system automatic.
You still have to monitor the Ph and PPM of your Hydroponic nutrient solution and make adjustments up or down when needed but the feed times and duration along with the grow lights coming on and going off is fully automatic when you install good timers in your Hydroponic system.
Some larger commercial Hydroponic operations actually have monitors and alarms installed to monitor Ph and PPM of their nutrient tanks. Most smaller Hydroponic systems rely on human monitoring of these things, usually checking these things on a daily basis.
To make our Hydroponic gardening system fully automatic we will need a timer for lights and also a timer for the Hydroponic nutrient tank pump. If you already know what you will be growing and what kind of Hydroponic system you will be using that will help a lot with choosing the right timers. Knowing what our Hydroponic growing medium will be helps even more. This simple timer here is by Intermatic and is really all you will need to control most Hydroponic grow lights. You can find this and similar type timers in most hardware stores or even in department stores.
This particular model has up to 3 on and off settings per day and for your Hydroponic grow light you will just be needing 1 on and 1 off setting per day. Try to get a timer that is rated heavy duty (15 amps or more) and has a 3 prong grounded outlet. Any timer that is rated for air conditioners or appliances should be fine. You will be setting your light timer for about 18 hours on and 6 hours off. That can change at blooming time to about 12 on and 12 off if you are growing crops that flower.
Hydroponic gardening - Hydroponic light/nutrient timers
This is an excellent Hydroponic nutrient tank timer by Grasslin, which is a sister company of Intermatic. This Grasslin T35 timer can be set on and off in 15 minute intervals which is great if we are using a Hydroponic growing medium such as hydroton or similar type growing mediums. It will run on for 15 minutes then off for whatever time you set it off for then on again for another 15 minutes and so on. It is 15 amps, has a manual override and a 3 prong grounded plug.
This timer can be found at most Hydroponic stores. This would a good timer for most Hydroponic systems and also several types of Hydroponic growing mediums. If you need to water your Hydroponic plants for less than 15 minutes each time this is not the timer you want for your Hydroponic system. There are other timers that will work for shorter watering times.
Hydroponic gardening - Hydroponic light/nutrient timers
If you need shorter Hydroponic watering on times this is a great digital 7 day programable Hydroponic timer that will work for most all Hydroponic systems. This Grasslin timer is rated at 15 amps, has a manual override, a 3 prong grounded plug and features a built battery for memory backup. This Hydroponic timer can be set at 1 minute intervals so if you need to water for only 4 or 6 or 10 minutes in your Hydroponic system it will do that. It has up to 8 on and off settings per day and is very easy to program. This is an excellent Hydroponic timer that will work in almost all Hydroponic systems and has a lot more flexibility in the time settings. Most Hydroponic stores carry it.
There are many Hydroponic timers on the market and sometimes foresight can pay off in the long run. It is probably better to invest in a Hydroponic timer that actually does more than we need it to do because you never know what you might be changing in your Hydroponic growing later on. You may need those extra functions and added flexibility some day. Hydroponic gardening usually grows in size.
Hydroponic gardening - Hydroponic light/nutrient timers
This is another timer that can be used in Hydroponic sytems and at a very reasonable cost. This is an Intermatic model TN811 and is a multi settings timer. It has 48 push and pull pins that allow the user to set any devices at 30 minute intervals. By simply pushing down on the non removable trippers you can adjust your Hydroponic system daily settings very easily and you don't have to worry about losing any of the trippers.
This timer has a manual override and 24 on and 24 off settings per day and is rated at 15 amps. We use this one in many Hydroponic Ebb and Flow systems that use hydroton or similar materials as the Hydroponic growing medium. Just pull 1 tripper up and then 6 down to set your Hydroponic Ebb and Flow system for 30 minutes on and 3 hours off as we have shown here. We have it set for 5 Hydroponic watering cycles per day at 30 minutes on for each cycle. You would pull 1 up and push 4 down for 30 minutes on and 2 hours off.
This is a very simple timer to use for Hydroponic Nutrient tanks and it works great. The only drawbacks are it does not come with a 3 prong grounded receptacle so you may need to use an adapter. This is not a problem if you have it plugged into a surge protector which is good to do anyway. If you are using a Hydroponic growing medium like coco peat alone or any Hydroponic medium that holds water a very long time 30 minutes may be too long and you would be better with a different type of Hydroponic timer. If you ever have a power outage with this one just turn the dial to the correct current time and you are ready to go again.
Hydroponic gardening - Hydroponic light/nutrient timers
This is yet another type of timer that can be used in Hydroponic gardening systems. This in a model DT17C 7 day digital programable timer from Intermatic. This timer offers up to 14 on and 14 off settings per day and up to 98 on and off settings per week. It has a 15 amp 500 watt rating and also has an internal battery memory backup in case of a power outage. It also has a 3 prong grounded receptacle.
For our intended Hydroponic usage I would think that this type of timer would work for almost any Hydroponic system or any Hydroponic growing medium that is being used. The wattage is lower than most timers I have seen so care should be taken not to overload it. Intermatic makes many larger commercial wall type timers as well. Many Intermatic wall mounts timers are being used as irrigation timers for outdoor sprinkler systems. Many of these types of timers would also work equally as well for Hydroponic timers if you have the space for them.
